Davao’s Cacao Farmers are going digital. PLDT and Smart have partnered with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) and the Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Training Institute (DA-ATI) to assist in the digital boost.
Davao’s Cacao Farmers
80% of the Philippines’ cacao is produced in Davao. Davao cacao and Davao chocolates are considered as some of the best in the world.
The Digital Farmers Program provides training and tools to the farmers. The program started in 2024 and has trained over 300 farmers in local communities.
It covers all essential parts of the farming process such as mobile apps for crop monitoring and track weather conditions. There are also modules and tools to manage resources. Finally, farmers connect with more buyers via online marketplaces.

Modernization and Sustainability
Meanwhile, partner organization MEDA provides training on sustainable farming techniques. This ensures that farmers maximize resources while protecting the environment.

Lizabeth Gabonada, a farmer and member of the MIEDECO cooperative shares “These apps help us monitor the weather properly. Now, we can decide the best time to plant and find the best areas for growing cacao. That makes a huge difference.”
The undeniable positive impact of the Digital Farmers Program demonstrates how technology and collaboration can transform agriculture in the Philippines. The initiative has already earned recognition from both local and international organizations for its impact. This is proof that digital inclusion is key to modernizing farming.
According to PLDT and Smart’s Head of Stakeholder Management Stephanie V. Orlino “We’re committed to making sure Davao’s cacao farmers can succeed in an era where everything’s online. By equipping them with the right tools and knowledge, we’re not just helping them grow their businesses—we’re strengthening the entire agricultural sector.”
Beyond Cacao
PLDT and Smart are focused on expanding livelihood opportunities and supporting food security across the country. Through their network and
innovation, PLDT and Smart are helping Filipino farmers thrive in an increasingly digital world.
The Digital Farmers Program supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 1 No Poverty and Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.
