PCIJ’s special podcast: Impressions of Davao

Last October, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) held a training for Mindanao journalists. One outcome of that training is a series of short podcasts on different impressions of Davao City. The series, entitled Impressions of Davao: A Special Podcast, is posted at the PCIJ blog. The topics of the podcasts include the smoking policy in the city, the local music scene, the Philippine Eagle, the durian and the Crocodile Park. When people ask me where I go to drink coffee, eat dessert or access WiFi, I often tell them I go to Kasagingan. Most of them think I’m kidding them because they have no idea what or where Kasagingan is. Well, it is a cafe, located at F. Torres Street. It is one of the best coffee places in town, not just because of their great food and coffee, but more so because of the great ambiance.

Rating Davao City’s Movie Theaters

Watching movies has always been a favorite pastime of mine, be it at home or at the theater. In Manila, I’m more than willing to shell out 200 pesos for a movie ticket, even more for premieres. I know the price is silly, but come to think of it, even if the movie sucked, the sound quality and comfy seats make the experience partially worthwhile. The cinemas at Greenhills Shopping Center and Powerplant are the best in my book. In Davao City, there are only a few worth mentioning. Here they are, in order of preference:
