Four years ago, Alchemy of Vision and Light, held the very first Guerilla Digital Filmmaking Workshop here in Davao City. It was the brainchild of director Drei Boquiren and filmmaker Dax Cañedo. Guerilla aims to encourage aspiring Davaoeño filmmakers to pursue the craft. With the advent of digital cameras, and the development of simple and relatively cheap filmmaking software and equipment, filmmaking has become more accessible.

Last October, professionals, businessmen, educators, and graphic artists converged to join Alchemy’s 4th Guerilla Digital Filmmaking Workshop. It was facilitated by Alchemy’s freelancers led by RJay Sta. Teresa. The participants had the opportunity to learn from some of the best filmmakers in the city. Among the resource speakers were Dax, Drei and Andrea Lozano. Rising digital filmmaker Sherad Anthony Sanchez, was also there to discourage and encourage the aspiring filmmakers.

Sherad is the director of Ang Huling Balyan ng Buhi, an entry to Cinema One Originals. Sherad has already won international accolade for his short film “Apple.” Sherad shared his expertise and his experiences as a filmmaker based in Metro Manila. He expressed some of the comments and suggestions of film critics. Sherad encourages Mindanaoan filmmakers to make films about topics and issues that are close to them.

The 4th Guerilla Digital Filmmaking Workshop ended last October 29. On December, the digital films of the participants and other Mindanaoan filmmakers will be showcased in the 2nd Mindanao Film Festival.

And next year, Alchemy will once again hold another Guerilla Digital Filmmaking Workshop. So if you’re interested in digital filmmaking, or simply a filmlover, watch out for these two upcoming events.
